Athanasios Diakos

Known by the name Ano Mousounitsa until 1959, the village Athanasios Diakos is built at an altitude of 1100 meters at the foot of Vardoussia.

Athanasios Diakos is the homeland of the homonymous hero of 1821 that found a horrible death at the hands of the Turks. In the square between the two plane trees, overlooks the statue of Athanasios Diakos while the village survives his homestead, which since 2009 has been converted into a small but modern museum. There, apart from information on the action hero of the Revolution of 1821 are exposed arms and clothes from the same period. Every year, in fact, the last weekend of July the festival Diakia takes place in his honor.

By Athanasios Diakos passes the European path E4 and start the routes to top Vardoussia, at a distance of only 11 km from the village, the shelter Pitimaliko is much closer.

Athanasios Deacon is fortunate to be surrounded by fir and chestnut trees, oaks , cedars and sycamores and the river runs through the village with the bridge that passes over it to be a meeting place for visitors and residents.
