Vargiani

Characterized as an appreciable settlement because of its stone houses with the bright red roofs, Vargiani is located at an altitude of 900 meters, on the slopes of the Mount Parnassus.

Located 8 km from Gravia and 7 km from Hani of Gravia, Vargiani is known for the victorious battle of the Greeks against the Turks on 14 September 1824.

Vargiani in the liberation struggle of ’21 has highlighted valiant fighters like Captain Liapis (whose daughter, is said that the King Othonas fell in love with) and Nikos Balaouras, while twenty men of the village took part in the conquest of the castle of Salona, on 10April, on the same the day of Easter, in1821.

In the south of Vargiani, in the middle of a rock is situated Neraidospilia, a cave with stalagmites and stalactites, for which is said to has once inhabited by fairies.

Inside Vargiani, there are the famous sources of Bourboula, while worth visiting Agios Thanasis, the aqueduct and the village’s square, where every year takes place on 26 July the festival of Agia Paraskevi.
