Agios Ioannis in the Old City

The church of Agios Ioannis in the Old City of Corfu  is one of the most beautiful that you will find during your stroll in the narrow alleyways. While walking in Theotokis street, you can see the lateral part, with the entrance and the tall bell-tower.

Agios Ioannis in the Old City of Corfu is of single aisled basilica rhythm with an external narthex and hosts several religious relics and icons of Tzanes and Chrysoloras, two of the greatest Corfiot artists, while the dome is a work of Sperantzas (1773).

Some of the most aristocrat families of Corfu had this church as their property, including amongst others the families of Voulgaris, Theotokis, Kapodistrias and Polylas.

Agios Ioannis in the Old City of Corfu was the see of Great Head Priests until 1717, when the church was renovated, giving it the shape of its current image.

The icon screen of Agios Ioannis in the Old City is made of Corfiot marble, while the monstrance of the Altar is of Russian art. In the shrine of the church, relics of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos and of Agios Ioannis Damaskinos are saved.

Among the crowds of Corfiots of all creeds that went to the church of Agios Ioannis in the Old City it is said that some were Dionysios Solomos, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Iakovos Polylas and the composer of the National Anthem of Greece, Nikolaos Mantzaros, while Nikiforos Theotokis officiated as a priest.

In Agios Ioannis in the Old City there is also an ecclesiastical museum where, you can see the Liturgical Vestments and pectoral cross of Nikiforos Theotokis, among other exhibits.

Agios Ioannis in the Old City of Corfu is the only church with a pulpit on the south wall, as it is said that, the crowds that flocked and filled the courtyard could only hear the preachers this way.
