Akritochori

Akritochori is located on the provincial road Methoni – Falanthi, near Finikouda of Messinia and within 2 kilometers from the beach of Loutsa of Messinia. Akritochori, which was formerly called Grizi, has kept its traditional character, its square, its wild vines and plane trees, and it “nests” on Mavrovouni at an altitude of 225 meters. The sea view is priceless.

Although it is a mountain village, due to its short distance from the sea, Akritochori attempts in recent years to become more and more attractive for locals and visitors.

Akritochori has a population of 195 inhabitants, according to the census of 2011, who are mainly engaged in traditional agricultural crops.

The village celebrates on October 26, on the feast day of Saint Demetrios, with a big festival. In recent years, the village youths have been organizing another great celebration on Sunday of the Prodigal Son, as part of the celebrations of the Carnival. Villagers set cauldrons for the traditional pig melting, while beside takes place the smoking of sausages with aromatic wood from the mountain, such as lentisk, sage, oak. Women of Acritochori offer guests exceptional flavors, from bites (handmade pasta) and bread to plakotiganites, pies, diples and handmade pasteli.
