Ano Verga

Ano Verga is a small village, only 20 km away from Kalamata at the entrance of Mani. It is located on the first peak of Taygetos, at 1,000 meters above sea level and is located 2 km away from the sea. The view is breathtaking as it is near the Messinian Bay and at high altitude.

In Ano Verga you can enjoy the mountain with fresh air and oxygen and within 15 minutes you can go for swimming in the sea in one of the many beaches of Kalamata.

The narrow cobbled streets of the village end at the square of Ano Verga which is located on the highest point of the village with huge plane trees and a church dedicated to Virgin Mary. The residents gathered there in the evenings and sit around the stone mantel chatting and enjoying the environment. In Ano Verga there are two taverns and two tourist resorts.

The historic battle of Verga took place in the region of Ano Verga which also includes the village of Kato Verga, and people of Mani, barricaded behind the wall of Verga and won the cavalry of Ibrahim when he tried to conquest the “unconquered” Mani.
