Church of Agia Sophia in Gournitsa
The church of Agia Sophia in Gournitsa is located in the village that the locals call Gournitsa near Old Kardamili of Western Mani and is 42 kilometers away from Kalamata.
The church of Agia Sophia in Gournitsa is built on the outskirts of the village, on the edge of the hill with view over the plains of Kardamyli. It is of cruciform style and is made of limestone. The fine lines and the double dome impress the visitor. It was a monastery in the past while an inscription says that the church was built in 1630 and was painted in 1700 by Georgios Makrymallis, a famous painter.
Except for the church of Agia Sophia in Gournitsa the area also has a small temple, built in 1590, and the chapel of Panagitsa, which was founded in 1768.
The Gorge of Viros passes next to the small village. If you want to cross it, you should follow the dirt road that starts from the church of Agia Sophia in Gournitsa and leads to the Monastery of Savior, built in the Gorge.
