The Liberation of Kalamata

The date March 23rd is the anniversary of the Liberation of Kalamata from the Ottoman rule. They organize every year on Square of March 23rd in the old town the representation of occupation and liberation of 1821 and the outbreak of the Revolution, while other cultural events are also organized.

On 23 March 1821 the rebellious Greeks won a great victory over the Turkish conquerors, the Liberation of Kalamata.

This important victory is celebrated brilliantly every time in Kalamata, a tradition kept on the Messinian capital for many years. The celebrations of the Liberation of Kalamata include parade, race known as the “Road of Sacrifice” with prizes for the winners, advent of the Sacred Flame of the Holy Monastery of oak, doxology at the Church of Agioi Apostoloi, the historic church, where they lighted the flame of Revolution , a short memorial service in memory of the fallen heroes and most importantly the representation of the occupation of the city which led to the Liberation of Kalamata.
