Mathia

Mathia is a small mountainous village in Messinia, built at the foot of Mountain Lykodimos at an altitude of 500 meters. It belongs to the municipality of Messini and is 38 km away from the city of Kalamata.

The surrounding area of Mathia was called Dragka during the Ottoman period.

In 1821 the legendary Captain Davis Triandafillopoulos crushed the Ottoman army with his men near Mathia. A magnificent monument honoring the fighters and their leader is at the entrance of the village welcoming the guests in the heroic place.

Mathia is one of the villages of Messini having tourist infrastructure asyou will even find there luxurious rooms to stay and you can relax in nature.

The view is panoramic from the streets of Mathia: You can relax gazing at the endless blue of the Messinian Bay, Taygetos which rises on the horizon, or Kalamata and Koroni that lie on the valley.

The beach of Kalamaki is just seven kilometers away from the village, while Mathia is 11 km away from Petalidi.
