Velika

Velika is a lowland village located in the southwestern part of the region of Messinia, near the coast of the Messinian Bay. It belongs to the municipality of Messini and is 20 kilometers away from the city of Kalamata.

About 300 people live in Velika and work in tourism and farming field. Velika was created in the early 20th century by the movement of populations from the location Filippaki.

According to tradition, the village Velika took its name by a Turkish general who lived there and was called Velik Agha.

The village has tourist organization, and within two and a half kilometers from the village of Velika, passing through an area with reeds, you will find the long beach of Velika. The fine golden sand and trees on the coast make it a meeting point for many locals and tourists during the summer. In the surrounding area you will find apartments, hotels and taverns.
