The Cave of Kastriotissa

One of the largest caves in Oiti is Kastriotissa’s Cave, located just outside the homonym village, at an altitude of 1,160 meters on the slope of the mountain. The Cave of Kastriotissa is also known as Vilchaki or Velchaki from the place name of the position where is currently situated the entrance.

The speleologists, who did the surveying of the Cave of Kastriotissa, calculated also the length to 110 meters, which gives even greater importance in this cave of Oiti. As the area has rich archaeological importance, with the Castle of Kastriotissa be built about 2,500 years ago, it’s probable that this neighboring cave had a religious use in antiquity, as it was a frequent phenomenon. The stalactites and stalagmites decorate the Cave of Kastriotissa and confirm its antiquity.

The access to the Cave of Kastriotissa today is quite difficult and hard, it requires specific experience and very good knowledge of the area. Only skilled speleologists, but also the villagers engaged in the cave, they can lead the visitors safely till the entrance of the Cave of Kastriotissa.
