Ecclesiastical Museum of Arkadi monastery

The Ecclesiastical Museum of Arkadi monastery is located at the site of the homonymous monastery, in its southern wing, in Rethymno prefecture, approximately 23 km far from Rethymno. It is one of the most important historical monuments on Crete and a sacred symbol of freedom. The Ecclesiastical museum of Arkadi Monastery highlights its rich history.

The museum displays the sacred flag of the Arcadian dramatic events, old icons of Post Byzantine mainly period, weapons of the Greek War of Independence, pieces of the old iconostasis, vestments, manuscripts, stamps and more. Also in the monastery hosts the relics of the Four Martyrs of Rethymno, of Agios Panteleimonas, of Agios Charalambos, of Agios Eleutherios, of Agios Tryphonas, of Agios Vlasios, of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos and others.

The exhibits of Ecclesiastical museum of Arkadi Monastery also include collections of Cretan icons, ecclesiastical books and manuscripts. Among the exhibits, the most important is the sanctuary doors depicting the Annunciation and the Apostles Peter and Paul of the 15th century, Agios Ioannis Prodromos (Saint John the Baptist) of the late 16th century, the enthroned Christ of 1631 and Agios Georgios Kefaloforos of the 17th century.
