Monastery of Agios Athanasios

On the beautiful island of Samothrace, with the thousand churches, on a picturesque hillside near the village of Alonia , next to the military camp of the island, is located the monastery of Agios Athanasios. It is a dependency of the Monastery Iviron on Mount Athos, which has been granted however to the Diocese of Alexandroupoli.
The Monastery of Agios Athanasios is a place of tranquility for the visitors. In the courtyard stands the homonymous stone-built church of Agios Athanasios, a small church with centuries of history. The Monastery of Agios Athanasios also has a stone building that houses the supervisor of the Dependency. The church, which has been renovated recently and is celebrated on January 18, has frescoes of Theophanis the Cretan, the great Cretan hagiographer who lived in the 16th century.
The monastery of Agios Athanasios of Samothrace is mentioned in the book of Ion Dragoumis about the island, in the chapters “The Dependency” and “Nervous Dialogues”, describing the sacred atmosphere and devotion felt by the visitor.
