Apart from its natural beauty and the feasts, the visitor of Samothrace should also not miss the traditional dishes of the island that really stand out.
Among the traditional dishes you should definitely try is the goat in the oven, not only because it is stuffed with rice, chicken livers and herbs, but also because the goats in Samothrace are free ranging and wander freely throughout the island.
A meal with traditional dishes of Samothrace will definitely include manti – pie filled with rice and roasted minced pork – or lioto, braised meat, that is, with mashed nuts, and you should also look for the famous fry bean soup.
The island’s traditional dishes also include sour trahana, the zmaroupatou, a pie, that is, with flour and stuffed with grated zucchini and mint, as well as a pie with glykochortara (wild greens), lapsana and poppies.
Another traditional dish prepared on Easter in Samothrace is lampriatis – goat baked in the oven and stuffed with rice, green onions, dill, raisins and chopped liver.
The ideal way, finally, to complete a meal of traditional dishes is with dessert – either chaslama (halva in the pan) or with spoon sweet made of mirabelle plums, from the homonymous tree, which grows only on Samothrace.
