Markos Vamvakaris Museum

It would be inconsiderate not to have o museum in honor of the great “rebetis” Markos Vamvakaris, born in Syros (1905) and stayed there for his first years. Markos Vamvakaris Museum is located in Ano Syros district and is accommodated in a renovated duplex in the center.

In Markos Vamvakaris Museum visitors have the opportunity to see photographs and old memorabilia of the “rebetis”; his passport and ID, shoes and clothes, manuscripts and lyrics, his ring, watch and other personal belongings, some of them granted by the family so as to be in the museum that has his name.

A 30-minute duration documentary will be playing all the time, giving details about the life of the greek “rebetis”.

Every summer in Ano Syros there is organized a folklore music festival in memory of Markos Vamvakaris, called “Music routes… in the streets of Markos”. The Markos Vamvakaris Museum is open only in summer. Mon- Sun  10:30 – 13:10  & 19:00 – 22:00
