Androussa
Androussa is a big village of the municipality of Messini, which is 21 km away from the city of Kalamata, 11 km away from Messini and also 11 km away from the important archaeological site in the region, Ancient Messini.
The village dates back to the Middle Ages and it has strong traditional style. About 700 residents live in Androussa and are mainly occupied with farming. The area of Androussa annually produces 500 tons of figs.
The castle of the village Androussa is work of William Villehardouin , built in the 13th century. There are still parts of the wall and the aqueduct. During the Venetian period, according to sources, the Castle of Androussa was the most important in Messinia, even in Kalamata.
In Androussa you will see the Byzantine church of the Assumption in the region Eva, the church of Samarina and the Byzantine lighthouse of the village.
Very close to Androussa there is also Andromonastiro, an abandoned old monastery that is one of the most important Byzantine monuments of Messinia.
