Virgin Pantanassa

Just outside of Gravia in a magnificent green location pops the Byzantine Monastery of the 15th century, Virgin Pandanassa. It is situated at an altitude of 700 meters, offers a view of natural beauty to its visitors, who can also admire the Byzantine style with two domes church, which is dedicated to the Virgin Pandanassa.

It is not currently a manned monastery, but is holds twice a year: in the festival of the Source of Life (Friday of Diakainisimou, Easter) and the Performance of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on 23th of August.

During the Greek Revolution of 1821, all the monks, to the Virgin Pandanassa, were tortured to death by the Turks, who broke their rage here for the Struggle of the Greeks.

In October 1942, the monastery was burned by Italian troops and has been destroyed completely. The worshippers and the scientists later, managed to save a part of the Byzantine hagiographies that adorn the Virgin Pandanassa and the visitor can admire them into the sacred space of the temple.

The Virgin Pantanassa is 4 kilometers from the Gravia and five kilometers from the village Mariolata, while to get to the monastery, you will need to cross an accessible dirt road.
