Ano Meria

Ano Meria of Samothrace is a settlement with about 50 residents. It is located in the eastern part of the island, which is the most sparsely populated and you will find it on the road that continues after Therma, the tourist village with the hot mineral springs. The whole village of Ano Meria, which is also sparsely populated, is built on a wooded hillside covered with chasteberries, plane trees and oaks, which compose a verdant landscape.
Every year, on July 26, the day of the celebration of Agia Paraskevi, a feast takes place at the small chapel built by the sea in Ano Meria. The Apanomerites (the residents of Ano Meria) organize a great feast after Mass and traditional gorgovrasto, as they call in Ano Meria a dish of goat cooked in a specific way, is offered to the believers and the visitors. The festival is organized every year by the cultural and environmental association “O Angistros” whose members come from Ano Meria.
At the edge of the village of Ano Meria you can still see the ruins of the medieval fortifications of Gateluzzi, another one of the Towers of Samothrace.
