Agios Dimitrios

Agios Dimitrios is a village in Syros, located on the eastern side of the island. It is one of the smallest villages in Syros and has about 50 residents. It is just north of the Ermoupoli and belongs to the Municipality of Ano Syros.

Despite being so small, Agios Dimitrios is one of the most popular places of Syros. The reason is the orthodox, majestic church of Agios Dimitrios that dominates in the edge of a cliff in the village. It is an imposing Christian church with a large dome, visible from afar, and the landscape’s background is the clear blue sea.

Characteristic is the fact that, according to the tradition in Syros, the ships that arrive or leave the island are not whistling while entering or leaving the port of this, but when they pass in front of Agios Dimitrios. According to the tradition, the priest of the church retaliates by hitting the bells!
