Galatas

The village of Galatas is located only six kilometers west of Chania and it is the birthplace of one of the most important contemporary Greek composers, Mikis Theodorakis. The village is situated in a fertile plain with citrus and olive groves that provide wonderful scenery combined with the deep red roofs of the small houses of Galatas.

The coastal village of Galatas, with Kalamaki beach is an attraction for thousands of tourists every year. Kalamaki has fine sand, shallow and crystal clear waters as well as a very well organized beach.

In November 2013, the Municipal Council of Chania approved the study of the regeneration, restoration and repair of the paternal house of Mikis Theodorakis at Galatas, in order to convert the residence into a museum, available for exhibitions.

When the rehabilitation work is completed items that belong to the Theodorakis family will be exhibited at Galatas and, final, there will be electronic access to the work of the composer, bibliography. Research laboratories relative to the work of Mikis Theodorakis will be also exhibited.
