Kavallariana

Kavallariana is a settlement of Kantanos in Chania, located three kilometers from the center of the municipal Kantanos – Selino.

In Kavallariana, according to the census of 2011, stay just five residents. The village is built at an altitude of 513 meters in an area that is predominantly agricultural and ranching and is located 58 kilometers from the city of Chania.

Close to Kavallariana, you will find the Byzantine church of Michael the Archangel, built in the 14th century. The frescoes of painter John Pagomenos are dating in 1327 and they are an important work of art of the period and of the greatest and oldest of Crete. The fourteen donors of the church seem in the hagiographies divided into two groups.

The path to the Archangel Michael starts from the road after Kavallariana, while in the starting point, there is the relative sign. It is relatively short and worth to crossed one to admire this monument in the nature of Kantanos.
