Vafes
Vafes is a small village, which is 37 km from Chania. It is situated at an altitude of 210 meters and the few inhabitants are engaged in farming producing oil and wine.
Vafes of Apokoronos is the only village in the prefecture of Chania which has been declared since 1997 entirely by the Ministry of Culture as a historical monument because of its significant magnificent architecture and history.
Strolling in the the streets of the small village of painting, you realize the beauty of Venetian buildings.
In Vafes, there is a tavern to eat and a hostel to stay, which is divided into two buildings which were restored following the architectural heritage of the place.
In Vafes, there is the church of the Holy Apostles with the golden temple and arches, the very old stone vaulted storerooms. In two of these, the village’s priest has gathered a small collection of icons of the 18th century.
