Neochori

Neochori is built at the foot of Mount Voulkano close to Meligala . It has about 210 inhabitants engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Neochori was founded in 1862 by residents of nearby villages and Alonistaina Arcadia. In Neochori you can see the old stone school, the square with the fountains and the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul. The village also has the the abandoned house of Maria Callas’ father, who had a pharmacy Meligala.

But the most important attraction of the area is the bridge of Mafrozoumaina , the oldest bridge in use in Europe built in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas. You will find it to the road to Meligala. In the area Betsi, on the road to the village Mavrommati  you will encounter a beautiful stone chapel of St. George built in a lush green landscape.

About 800 meters away from Neochori there are the historic Well since the battle of Meligala in 1944 between rebels and security battalions where they erected a huge cross as a monument with the names of those executed.

Near Neochori you can still visit the Old Monastery of Voulkano on the summit of Mount Ithomi and Ancient Messini  located approximately 6 km away from the village.
