Rethymno - Access

You can reach the county of Rethymno from Chania or Heraklion, whether you arrive there by ship or plane. Rethymno is connected to Chania and Heraklion by direct intercity buses, KTEL.

By plane.

Rethymno doesn’t have its own airport, so, you can get there from Chania or Heraklion, if you arrive by plane.

During the whole year, there are two flights from “Eleftherios Venizelos”, Athens International airport, per day to Chania or Heraklion. One flight is made early in the morning and the other - in the evening. In summer, due to busy traffic, the schedule is enriched and there are more daily flights performed. A flight from Athens to Chania lasts 45 minutes.

The Chania airport is located 15 kilometers out of the city of Chania.

From Chania, a traveler can access Rethymno by KTEL Chanion which is located on the Kidonias Street in Chania. The bus will take you to Rethymno to the Kefalogiannidon Street. You can also take a taxi; the ride via Highway Chania-Rethymno (60 km) will last approximately one hour.

From Heraklion, a traveler can access Rethymno by KTEL Heraklion or by taxi; the ride via Highway Heraklion-Rethymno (80 km) will last a bit longer than one hour.

You can access Rethymno from Thessaloniki as well, since there are direct flights to Heraklion and Chania.

By ship

There are no direct ferry links to Rethymno. You can access Rethymno by ship from port Piraeus to Chania or Heraklion ports. Ferries are scheduled on a daily basis throughout the year, during the summer period, though, the number of ferries increases. The ferries sail out the Piraeus port towards Chania or Heraklion every evening and the journey lasts 6-10 hours, depending on the liner preferred. Inside the port of each city, there are KTEL busses’ stops, which with transfer the passengers directly to Rethymno.

During the summer period there are scheduled routes, three times a week, from Rethymno to Santorini.
