Rethymno - Beaches

The natural beauty of prefecture Rethymno is not confined to caves and gorges since the island’s seabed hides another magical world, with its beaches leading us to the deep seas of the South.

The southern Rethymno coasts are full of deserted harbors and picturesque beaches, while the north coast is where the most cosmopolitan beaches are gathered.

The southern coasts of Rethymno are famous for their crystal clear waters. You will find unique landscapes there like the dunes of Agios Paulos, with its golden fine sand and mysterious energy aura. Next to the dunes, the fascinating Triopetra unfolds, one of the most impressive beaches of Crete with characteristic large rocks at one side. There is also the magnificent beach of Preveli located in the estuary of Kourtalioti River with its beautiful palm groves and natural bathtubs on the main beach and other, less known, but equally beautiful beaches, such as Ligres.

On the other hand, the beaches of the north part of the county, most of which have been awarded with the Blue Flag, are considered the most known. The seabed’s residents are in fact the migrant species from the Mediterranean, who find their home along the coasts of fisherman village Bali. Those, who wish to avoid crowded places, prefer the Rethymno beach and the Episkopi beach. Wonderful small bays with crystal clear waters can be found in Geropotamos. In the area of Plakias there are numerous small beaches, with Ammoudi and Damnoni among them.

All the beaches of the Rethymno County are waiting for you as an unforgettable summer destination, still hiding some secret seashores, like the gorgeous bay of Agia Fotia.
