Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete in Rethymno prefecture is located in the center of the Old Town, near the Venetian wall and the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, as of 2009, is a combination of the old Municipal Gallery “L. Kanakakis “(founded in 1992) and the Centre for Contemporary Art (founded in 1995) and has a permanent collection of about 500 works by contemporary Greek artists, covering a wide range of Modern Greek art from 1950 to date. Visitors will enjoy samples of art, from abstraction and geometry to neo-expressionism, new representation arts, minimalism, object in space, sculpture and combined sculpture and painting, installations in space and settings, conceptual art, photography, computer processed works of art.

The works of Rethymnian Lefteris Kanakakis (about 50 oil paintings, drawings, watercolor works) representatively cover all the phases of his work and were donated to the museum by Babis and Maria Marangos.

Throughout the duration of exhibitions guided tours for children, youngsters and adults are conducted every day.

The building that houses the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete is Venetian, bought in 1970 by the Municipality of Rethymno and today it is a modern museum space about 1 acre. In the same building, before it became property of the Municipality, a soap factory was housed, one of the first industrial spaces of the island.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete has drawn the attention of the national and the international community of art. International exhibitions and programs have been held and partnerships with institutions in Greece and abroad have been achieved. From 1992 to date, more than 100 exhibitions were organized (monographic and thematic) and 60 catalogs were issued.

As part of wider activities of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, since 1996, an Educational Sector and Visual Art Workshops are operating for children and adults.
