Mylopotamos

Approximately 35 km far from the city of Rethymno in the prefecture of Rethymno, the village of Mylopotamos is located.

In a large and diverse area, the mountain village of Mylopotamos lies, with a breeze of the Cretan Sea blowing at one side and hidden in the shade of Mount Psiloritis on the other.

Mylopotamos is mostly stockbreeding settlement and one of the most historic of Crete. A supplementary animal feed unit operates in the village along with the large cheese making cooperative. Apart from animal husbandry, however, it is also an oil producing region.

The village of Mylopotamos is rather unknown to most people, but offers numerous natural beauties, apart from the fact that the region has always been inaccessible. The society of the village is reserved, but welcoming. Until recently, moving to and from the village in winter was difficult, so the families with children had moved to larger cities. Slowly, however, they tend to return back to their pens and “mitata”.

In the wider region of Mylopotamos you can visit historical monasteries, such as Chalepa monastery and the monastery of Asomata, also known as the School of Asomata, which since 1930 has been operating as an Agricultural School.

Finally, every summer the Pancretan feast of the Shepherds and the Cheese is held here with participation of many villages of the prefecture.
