Tafkos of Mavri

The Tafkos of Mavri in Rethymno prefecture is a cavern-chasm that is located above the Vistagi village, at the southwestern foothills of Psiloritis, at an altitude of 1.450 meters.

The total explored depth of the Tafkos of Mavri reaches 200 meters, while there are vertical slopes of 50 meters and huge halls that cover areas of 1.500 sq. m. each.

In the Tafkos of Mavri, which according to experts must have an underground river, skeletons of male kri-kri (a Cretan goat) were found, which have disappeared from this region from the Ottoman period.
