Tou Maliou beach

The Tou Maliou beach or Tou Maliou to Ryaki is 15 km to the east of Rethymno city, in Rethymno prefecture, and few kilometers from Skaleta beach, before you reach Geropotamos.

The Tou Maliou beach is formed in the heart of a small bay in a quite isolated location. This pebbled beach is surrounded by tall steep cliffs, but still, it is affected by north winds blowing in the area.

These beautiful cavernous cliffs protecting the west side of the beach are the most recognizable characteristic of the Tou Maliou beach or else called Spilies. There were many caves on the east side of the beach as well, but they collapsed in winter of 2011-2012. Behind the beach, there are more of these caves, where the endangered species of Mediterranean seal “Monachus-Monachus” take refuge.

The Tou Maliou beach is not known among tourists, but there are some facilities provided, such as some umbrellas and a canteen.

The Tou Maliou beach can be accessed from Rethymno, if driving from Rethymno to Heraklion. After Skaleta there is a road that will take you to this marvelous beach.
