Ancient settlement of Kilindra

The ancient settlement of Kilindra, situated near the picturesque village of Samonas, in the province of Apokoronas in Chania, Crete.

Following the road that leads to the supercentenarian “monumental” Olive Tree of Samonas, one encounters traces of the ancient settlement of Kilindra.

Although today not much is left, in antiquity here stood a Mycenaean citadel.

As established by the findings of the excavations, most of which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Chania, the Minoan civilization flourished here until, for unknown reasons, the ancient settlement of Kilindra was abandoned.

Ancient pots from the New Palace period were found in the region.

It is worth visiting the cave of Samonas located near the ancient village of Kilindra.
