Azogires

Azogires is a village ‘drowned’ in greenery and located at an altitude of 320 meters. It is eight kilometers from Paleochora and 72 km from Chania. Near the settlement there are the famous caves of Harakas and Zoures, which are connected to the religious tradition of the village.

The cave of Harakas is located southeast of the cave of Azogires. At Azogires, the monastery of the Holy Fathers, which was built in 1864, is still well preserved.

The cave of Zouresis located in the northwest of Azogires, at an altitude of 535 meters. Three iron stairs help visitors to descent because the cave is rocky and unfathomable. As we move deeper, we can see the small church of the 99 Holy Fathers of the cave.

At Azogires, you should definitely visit the historical – folklore museum of the village and the Byzantine churches.

From Azogires to Paleochora there is a quite accessible path which also passes through the village of Anidri as well as from the beautiful beach of Gialiskari.
