The Bastion of Agios Nicholaos of Molos

The Bastion of Agios Nicholaos of Molos is built on the breakwater of the Venetian port of Chania, part of a larger complex that includes the old shipyard and the Egyptian Lighthouse. It was built during the Venetian rule on the angle formed around the center of the breakwater.

The Bastion of Agios Nicholaos of Molos and the Firka Fortress protected the port of Chania, making it impenetrable and inaccessible from the sea.

It took its name from the church of Agios Nicholaos of Molos, which was situated inside the Bastion. It was a small church with one room and an arch that is today buried beneath the level of the low square, where used to stand the cannons. A large part of the Bastion of Agios Nicholaos of Molos was demolished a few decades ago.

During the last years, many efforts and excavations have been made to try and bring to light the Bastion of Agios Nicholaos of Molos and to reveal the covered under the soil fillings temple.
