Gorges Vavouledo and Trachinou

The two small gorges Vavouledo and Trachinou are located in the region Old Roumata, in the Mount Apopigadi in the hinterland of Chania. Both are joined near the settlement Lidiana.

As they form a “circular” route, usually their traverse is combined. Hikers start from the Hamalevri of Old Roumata, where from the church of St. George – one kilometer east of the village – starts the path to the river bed of the gorge Vavouledo. Inside the gorge, there is a path that makes the tour inside it even easier.

In Lidiana, the Gorge Vavouledo “intersects” with the Gorge Trachinou and both end at the Mansions of Old Roumata. There, after the end of the hiking, you will find restaurants where you can eat and rest.

The Gorge Trachinou starts from the village of Trachinou. It is one of the gorges of Crete with the most vegetation, while its walls are very narrow, almost for its entire length. As in Vavouledo, in the Gorge of Trachinou, there is a path that leads the hiker.
