Plain Almyros

The Plain of Almyros is the fertile valley that surrounds Georgioupoli, the famous tourist resort of Crete, which is 38 km east of Chania and 21 km west of Rethymnon.

The natural wealth of Plain Almyros is due to its rivers and springs, while the cultivation of land is one of the main occupations of the inhabitants of the region. In the fertile soil of the plain Almyros are cultivated vines, olive trees, cereals, citrus fruits and vegetables, which are the main products of the island.

The plain Almyros took its name the Almyros river which crosses it and which in turn was named so as the water flowing between the banks is not sweet, as occurs with the majority of the rivers, but brackish. Georgioupoli Beach is extended two kilometers east of Almyros, until Kavros beach, which is a natural continuation of the first.

The plain Almyros is traversed by the river Perastikos that flows at the edge of the beach of Georgioupoli, 700 m. east of the harbor.
