Kastellos

Kastellos is one of the villages of Georgioupolis, at the northeastern side of the prefecture of Chania. The village is built at an altitude of about 200 meters above sea level, on top of a hill at the foothills of the White Mountains. Kastellos was therefore named after its location.

Formerly, the settlement was built at another location, where Agathes – one of the oldest villages of Crete- is now situated. The Turkish invasions of 1800, however, forced some of the residents to migration. Those who left their homes built a new settlement, Kastellos with approximately 100 permanent residents.

The Turkish invasions in the area of ​​Kastellos stopped in 1835, when the Turks were overwhelmingly defeated on a battle. The residents of Kastellos, however, have also demonstrated heroic resistance against the German occupation during the Second World War.
