The building of Democritus

The building of the Democritus University of Thrace in Alexandroupolis started being built in the early 20th century, while it has been expanded three times so far. It is basically a building complex located on the corner of Ioannis Kaviris and 23, Patriarhou Kirillou Streets in the city center. Today, the building of the Democritus University houses the library of the the School of Medicine and departments of the Pedagogical School.

Firstly, the building of the Democritus University was built in order to house the offices of the National Bank of Greece and the residence of its director in Alexandroupolis. The two-storey building is neoclassical, with decorative pillars on the facades, high shutters and narrow balconies. It has a vestibule at the entrance, while the ground floor housed the branch of the bank for many years. Until 1960, the building of the Democritus University was owned by the National Bank. Today, it belongs to the University of Thrace and all its spaces are properly used.

The building of the Democritus University was declared a listed building in 1999.
