Transfiguration of Jesus in Alexandroupolis

The Holy Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus (Metamorphosis tou Sotira) in Alexandroupolis is the second biggest Orthodox Church of Northern Greece, after Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. The Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus has a surface of 1000 square meters, while its dome reaches 33 meters in height! It is a very impressive building that was built as a basilica with a dome in 1965 in Alexandroupolis.

The relics of Saint Demetrius that have come here from Cappadocia by the region’s refugees are hosted today in the Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Alexandroupolis. The church is also full of remarkable icons, while the awe caused by its majestic interior leaves no visitor unmoved.

The Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Alexandroupolis celebrates grandly on August, 6. Many events are organized every year, though a special tradition is the one standing out. Along with the bread, at the Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Alexandroupolis grapes are also handed out, marking the season of grape harvest. Many of them, in fact, are “the first bunch” of the crop, which the winegrower leaves at the church in order for the grape harvest to go well.
