Kissano Gorge

The Kissano gorge in the prefecture of Rethymno lies approximately 1 km north of the village Kissos and 34 km southeast of the city of Rethymno.

One of the most beautiful canyons, though small, the Kissano gorge has an artificial pine forest of Vatolakkos at its beginning, while the visitor will also have the chance to admire cypresses, acacias, kermes oaks, wild olives and other trees. Walking through the gorge on the road that passes it, there is a big red rock towering, full of caves, where many raptors nest, such as vultures, falcons and griffon vultures. The locals call the Kissano gorge as the gorge of Kokkinos Detis, since in Cretan dialect detis means rock.

At the north side of Kissano gorge, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, there is the Agrimokefali cave, which remotely remind of a wild animals head (agrimi=wild animal, kefali=head). Inside the canyon, apart from the low vegetation, there are small waterfalls formed, making it ideal for climbing.

The Kissano gorge is crossed at one point by the road leading from Kissos to Yious Kampou with many herbs and colorful flora along its sides.
