Beach of Lake Kourna

Next to the village Kournas, two kilometers away, lies the Kournas Lake, the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. In summer, visitors can enjoy swimming on the beach of Lake Kourna, formed in the clear waters.

As the waters recede slightly, several small sandy beaches are formed in the Lake Kourna, facilitating your dives. You can rent umbrellas and pedal boats. There are cafes at the lakeshore.

Kournas is a hilly village almost unaffected by tourism, that belongs to the municipality of Apokoronas and has 500 residents.

Between the village and the beach of Lake Kourna there is a very beautiful cave, Kournas Cave which offers an amazing view. The old houses, the square of the village, the ceramic workshop opposite the large cafe and Agapinakis’ tavern “Kali Kardia”, with salads and tasty meat are the first things anyone notice in Kournas, which does not, however, provide special facilities for tourists.
