Church of St. George Mithymnas of Kissamos

The single-aisle, vaulted Chapel of St. George Mithymnas in the archaeological site of Mithymnas, near Drapania of Kissamos, was built during the first half of the 15th century in place of a Late Roman bath. The Church of St. George Mithymnas of Kissamos is located 35 km west of Chania and four km from Kastelli.

The Church of St. George Mithymnas of Kissamos until recently was in bad condition and its frescoes were covered with lime plaster, so renovation works were undertaken, as well as reconstruction of its layout and disclosure and maintenance of its frescoes.

The frescoes in the Church of St. George Mithymnas in Kissamos are fragmented, but from what is still preserved, it is evident that they were crafted by an excellent artist.

Of particular interest is the representation of the Holy Trinity on the eastern drum, in the form of three faces and, instead of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the portrayal of Saint Pachomios with the Angel.
