Municipal Theater of Corfu

The Municipal Theater of Corfu was founded in 1997 and is the last of the Municipal Theaters, which were established in Greece, an institution envisioned by the memorable Melina Merkouri.

The Municipal Theater of Corfu, apart from the theatrical productions of the Central, the Children’s and the Experimental Scene with plays from the classical and modern repertoire, it also has created theatrical workshops where, more than 280 students of all ages participate and motivated by the courses and the seminars, they present performances, literary evenings and theatrical events throughout the year.

The turning points in the artistic course of the Municipal Theater of Corfu were the opera productions in cooperation with the Musical Studies Department of the Ionian University and with choirs of the island, such as the operas «Il Barbiere di Seviglia» by G. Rossini, «La Traviata» by G. Verdi, «La serva padrona» by G. Pergolesi, «Dido and Aenias» by H. Purcell, «Silvano» by P. Mascagni. It also organizes many poetic and literary evenings with music from all over the world, presented to a general public, not only in purely theatrical venues but, also in museums, churches, squares of the Old City and in squares and historic buildings of villages.
