Corfu - Villages

If you want to discover the authentic life of Corfu do not forget to visit some of its villages and settlements which are scattered in the inland and along the coastline. More than 200 villages are scattered in the verdant environment of this place where, its residents await you to discover it, to be charmed and to feel like you are at home.

The island of Corfu geographically includes four different regions which maintain their names from the years of the Venetian occupation, perhaps even earlier. These regions are Oros, Gyros, Middle and South.

In Corfu when they say Oros they mean Pantokratoras, the highest mountain of the island which has shaped the character of the whole region. Many settlements and villages have developed, mostly in its slopes but, also on the coastline which today create the municipal sections of Thinaliou, Kassopaion  and Faiakon. Large, seaside resorts, such as Acharavi  and Kassiopi  or stone-built, mountainous villages of medieval architecture such as Episkepsi  and Palia Perithia  are located in this part of the island.

The region of Gyros includes the northwest of Corfu and it is named this way because formerly the location of these villages formed a round (gyros), i.e., a cycle. In this region are located the villages of the municipal section of Palaiokastriton , Esperion  and Agiou Georgiou. The popular Palaiokastritsa, the touristy Sidari  and Agros, are only some of the villages that are worthwhile visiting in this region.

Middle Corfu includes the central section of the island and the municipal sections of Kerkyraion, Achilleion, Meliteieon and Parelion. The region of the South includes the villages that constitute the municipal sections of Lefkimmaion and Korission, of course with Lefkimmi  in the center which is a large village of 3.500 residents.

On this travelogue you should not miss Diapontia Islands, in the north-western end of Greece, three little paradises, waiting for you to discover them.
