Kalives

Kalives is a beautiful seaside village belongs to the municipality of Vamos. Built in Souda Bay and is 19 kilometers east of the city of Chania.

Kalives is one of the areas in the Peninsula Drapanos, which together with Almyrida and Plaka are famous for their beautiful beaches, but also for their intense residential development.

It is said that Kalyves got their name from their makeshift shelters, built by Arab pirates, when they had invaded in 828 AD and conquered the area Saracenos, near the village. Another version is that the name comes from the huts built by farmers near their farms to stay in the summer, without having to return to their village every night.

Kalives with their relatively slow rhythms – since in this live about 1,400 permanent residents – an ideal base for those who want to explore the area and the picturesque villages of Vamos, one of the most beautiful and wooded areas in western Crete.
