Tomb of Ioannis Kapodistrias
The Tomb of Ioannis Kapodistrias is located in the Holy Monastery of Platytera, in the boundaries of the city of Corfu.
The family of the first governor of Greece, who was descended from Corfu had developed special relations with the Monastery, as a result of this, apart from the Tomb of Ioannis Kapodistrias the tombs of Antonios-Maria Kapodistrias (father of the Governor) and of Augoustinos Kapodistrias (brother of the Governor) are also there.
The Count Ioannis Kapodistrias (10th February 1776 – Nafplio 9th October 1831) served as first governor of Greece during the transitional period. Descended from an aristocratic family and as governor of Greece, he promoted significant reforms to rebuild the state. After his assassination in Nafplio which was the capital of the Greek state then, Kapodistrias’ corpse was transferred by his brother to Corfu to be buried in the Monastery of Platytera where, the Tomb of Ioannis Kapodistrias is found until today.
