Fragokastello Beach

Fragokastello beach is one of the most popular beaches in the region of Sfakia. It is located on the south coast of Chania and it is 18 km east of Sfakia. The endless sandy beach and its shallow waters make it perfectly suitable for children. It is organized, as you will find there parasols and sun loungers, while the village provides taverns and rooms for rent for tourists.

Very close to Fragokastelo beach stands the homonymous medieval castle. Fragokastello is one of the major attractions of the region and it is famous for the “appearance” of Drosoulites, shadows that locals say appear on the plain around the castle, every year, in late spring.

The Venetian name of the castle was Agios (Saint) Nikitas. The name Fragokastello attributed by the local population, however, prevailed, and means Castle of the Franks, as the locals used to call Franks all foreign Catholics. The name prevailed throughout the area, giving the beach in Fragokastello its name.

To the west of Frangokastello beach you will find the Vatalo beach and to the west the Orthi Ammos beach, if you prefer a more isolated environment.
