Doukades
One of the most picturesque and beautiful villages of the northern part of Corfu is Doukades. It is declared as a traditional settlement, built of stone at an altitude of 170 meters above the cosmopolitan Palaiokastritsa.
In Doukades is situated, probably the most impressive residence of the Corfiot countryside, the old mansion of the Theotokis family, of approximately 1.000 square meters which has been renovated recently and uncovers all its greatness. In the village there are also many remarkable mansions which you will discover if you wander in its alleys.
Doukades is traversed by a serpentine road with its epicenter being the church of Panagia Messochoritissa which was named this way because it is located in the center of the village. Another noticeable edifice in Doukades is the primary school of Venetian architecture which is well – maintained, at the entrance of the village. In the beautiful, stoned square of the village you will find taverns and coffee shops where, you can enjoy traditional recipes or drink a refreshing tsitsimpyra!
A cobbled path through the forest will lead you to the chapel of Agios Symeon, at an altitude of 350 meters. From there you can see from high above, Palaiokastritsa and the bay of Liapades on one side and the city of Corfu on the other.
The first written testimony of Doukades is found in a document of 1616 and the name of the village probably came from the first inhabitants who had the surname «Doukas».
