Easter on Ithaca
The traditions of Easter are kept faithfully on this small island of the Ionian Sea, where the solemnity of the Holy Week dominates the churches. The Church of Anogi, dating back to the Middle Ages, with the bell tower of the 12th century and its beautiful frescoes, is a must for your Easter on Ithaca. Crowds of worshipers flood during these days the Metropolitan Church of Ithaca in Vathi. Do not forget to admire the 17th-century iconostasis if you are there. On Good Friday evening, the Epitaphs are gathered in the central square, with a crowd attending in devotion. On the next day, the fireworks of Holy Saturday will carry the message of the Resurrection. On Easter Sunday afternoon, attend the liturgy of Love, in the Monastery of the Cathars – where you can admire the panoramic view of the island from the Monastery’s belfry.
