Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is a small village built on a verdant slope of a hill and with a view of the port of Petritis . The name Agios Nikolaos was given in 1940 and according to tradition Agios Nikolaos saved the village from the plague which ravaged the adjacent village of Marathias. Until then, the village was called Kolokythi, a naming which most probably was given because of the cultivation of zucchini (kolokythia) or from a surname Kolokythis. Previously, before the 17th century Agios Nikolaos was called Agnos, because of the plant agnos, a species of wicker which thrived in the area. Besides, for many years its residents were occupied with basketry and had the nickname «kanistrades», as kanistri means a basket. This nickname accompanies them even today.

In Agios Nikolaos you will see many loutrouvia and the main square, «Foros» of the village with its traditional coffee shops. Do not forget to visit the nearby traditional village of Argyrades  and to walk in its picturesque alleys. The nearest beach where you can swim is the small beach of Petritis  but, there are also larger ones, such as Marathias and Agios Georgios in Argirades , in the western shore of the island.
