Monastery of Myrtidiotissa

The Monastery of Myrtidiotissa is located in the region which, has its name, in Middle Corfu, dating back to the 16th century. It is built in a verdant landscape and near the see, and attracts hundreds of faithful and visitors every year. Very close to the Monastery of Myrtidiotissa, are situated the villages Pelekas  and Vatos, of Western Corfu, while the mountain on which, it is built, is called Agios Georgios. In order to get there you pass through one of the most impressive beaches of the island, Myrtiotissa.

The thing that stands out in the Monastery of Myrtidiotissa is the icon of Theotokos Myrtidiotissa, made with great technique and artistry, like many other icons of Ionian style that are located there. The big «throne room» is impressive, while the domesticated animals in the courtyard of the monastery are sure to greet you in their own way.

According to tradition, the name of the Monastery of Myrtidiotissa derives from the icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary) which, was found by the monk Daniil, after a vision he saw, in a cave surrounded by myrtles where, the monastery was built later.

The Monastery of Myrtidiotissa is celebrated on the 24th of September, on the day of the Most Holy Theotokos Myrtidiotissa, according to the Church.

You can also visit a restored oil mill that is in the Monastery of Myrtidiotissa.

If you find yourself in the Monastery of Myrtidiotissa you should not forget to stop and enjoy the unobstructed view of two of the most well-known and popular beaches of Corfu, Kontogialos  and Glyfada.

The Monastery of Myrtidiotissa is open from 08:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 22:00.
