Marathias is a small settlement in the center of the narrowest part of the island, about 32 kilometers from the city of Corfu. In the past Marathias was located at the top of a verdant hill which was abandoned because of a plague epidemic that exterminated a large part of its population. Those who survived, settled in the place where, the village is today, in the lowlands. Nowadays, in the old settlement there are only houses in ruins, the cemetery and a small church, Panagia Lampovitissa.
Marathias is known for its homonymous beach with crystal clear waters and a vast sandy shore. This beach, which is awarded with the Blue Flag, is organized with deck-chairs and parasols but, it is also famous for its beach bars and the parties on the beach which last until the early hours of the morning. Obviously, you must not forget to stay on the beach until late in order to enjoy the sun as it sets and one of the most impressive sunsets of the island.
