Chelidona

Chelidona is a semi mountainous village, at an altitude of 180 meters above sea level, in the prefecture of Evros. It is located in the northwestern part of the prefecture, on the borders with Bulgaria. It is 126 kilometers from Alexandroupolis and 33 kilometers from Didymoteicho. Until 1920, Chelidona was called Chalvatzi and it has 90 residents according to the 2011 census.

At a distance of 2.5 km from Chelidona to the north lies the burial mound of Mikri Doxipara – Zoni, an impressive archaeological excavation. In this tomb the five carriages that carried the dead to the tomb, were buried at the same place, while beside them are buried five horses.

Around Chelidona, you can visit the neighboring villages of Zoni and Mikri Doxipara, Fylakio, as well as Kyprinos on the borders between Greece and Bulgaria. Also nearby lies the valley of the Ardas River, an area of natural beauty, which enchants visitors.
